Higher Rural Suicide Rates Driven by Use of Guns

A new study from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that rural areas in Maryland have 35% higher rates of suicide than in the state’s urban areas. This is attributed to the higher use of firearms in rural areas. The study suggests that policymakers may “need to develop more robust rural firearm safety and control initiatives to deal with this pressing public health problem.”
