WPHRN Brief: Assessing Interest in a Public Health Residency Program

Most new staff hired to fill public health positions in local, state, and tribal agencies have not received comprehensive training and education specific to public health core competencies before they are hired. Although residency programs for clinical nursing professionals are common and highly effective at increasing workforce capability and decreasing turnover, such programs specific to public health professionals are rare. The results of this WPHRN survey indicate there is strong interest in and support for such a residency program among public health professionals and health directors.
